The Elegant Fabric of our Lives

On a day such as today... holidays evoke images and inspiration for the finer things in life...those elegant pieces or swatches of fabric that link us together...interwoven and integral to our unity...we reach out for a cup of tea, savouring that holiday weekend sense of well-being...

In Elizabethan times, women created and proudly displayed their sewing samplers, that demonstrated their sewing skills. From an early age girls learned to sew decoratively, in addition to utilitarian crafts. Museums display collections of samplers from the medieval era to the 20th century. I have always felt samplers were an endearing example of the ingenuity and elaborate skill our forebears possessed. They are indeed, poignant examples of the elegant fabric of their lives, preserved for all to appreciate and admire. Historically they are remarkable time capsules...but intrinsically they are endearingly beautiful....
